The government's move towards a more civilian approach to security also means that police education needs to be even more strongly tailored to civilian aspects and the new tasks.

Against this background, the Mission organised and accompanied a study trip for high ranked officials from the Ministry of Interior in Federal Iraq and Kurdistan to introduce them to police education in the Netherlands and Germany.

They were received by prestigious education institutions such as the Dutch Police Academy and the Police station in Apeldoorn, the Police University in Muenster and the Federal Police Academy in Luebeck.

Police education in the Netherlands and Germany are known for its high value placed on the rule of law, respect for human rights and a diverse environment in which men and women work together as equals. The Iraqi participants discussed in depth with their European counterparts the benefits that arise from these elements, such as more community-orientated policing.

“I am confident that this visit gave important impulses to further develop the existing curriculum for the education of police officers in Iraq and to implement continuous learning as well as specialised trainings,” said Ralf Schroeder, Deputy Head of EUAM Iraq, who accompanied the study trip.
