EUAM Iraq gave a presentation on human rights in countering terrorism in Jordan
20-11-2023

EUAM Iraq accompanied members of the Iraqi National Committee on Counter Terrorism to a regional event in Jordan organised by Platform for Human Rights Engagement (CT PHARE). The conference focused on human rights in countering terrorism and EUAM Iraq presented its work in providing strategic advice in Iraq on security sector reform.

During 3 days delegates from Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon discussed Accountability Mechanisms, Roles and Responsibilities in Countering Terrorism.

There was a clear commitment that taking human rights into account in the fight against terrorism helps to reduce violence and prevent further radicalisation. A human rights compliant policy also weakens support for radicalism among potential supporters and strengthens public confidence in criminal justice institutions and the rule of law. The failure to mainstream human rights in counter-terrorism is particularly worrying as it can encourage or even exacerbate the grievances that underpin violent extremist groups and contribute to the radicalisation of individuals to violence.
