EUAM Iraq compiles publication on Legal Aspects of the Protection of Iraqi Cultural Heritage
19-05-2022

The European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) has published a compilation of presentations by distinguished Iraqi law professors on the topic of protection of cultural heritage.

The compilation, titled Legal Aspects of the Protection of Iraqi Cultural Heritage. A Step Forward to the Revision of National Lawincludes a total of eight presentations that were delivered during a Legal Symposium hosted by EUAM Iraq on 28 February to 1 March 2022 in Baghdad, Iraq. The presentations range from touching upon the Antiquities and Heritage Law no. 55 of 2001 currently valid in Iraq to the crime of vandalism as a model to questions relating to intangible cultural heritage.

The European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq, launched in 2017 in response to a request by the Iraqi government for advice on how to undertake civilian security sector reform, is providing expertise on a diverse range of reform components. This includes upholding cultural rights through the protection of cultural heritage, as well as human rights at large.

EUAM Iraq was the first EU civilian crisis management mission to gain a mandate for cultural heritage protection. The European Union approach to cultural heritage protection in conflicts and crises is based on protecting and enhancing cultural heritage as a factor contributing to peace, reconciliation, and mutual understanding, as part of the fight against organized crime. The publication of this compilation of presentations is another example of the Mission's efforts in the field of cultural heritage protection.
