EUAM Iraq meets with the Minister of Interior
03-03-2021

EUAM Iraq Head of Mission (HoM) Christoph Buik meets with the Minister of Interior, H.E. Othman Al-Ghanimi to discuss bilateral relations and future cooperation. Mr. Buik informed the Minister about the Building Integrity programme that EUAM will carry out in partnership with the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI).

Given the continued civil unrest and demonstrations, especially in Iraq’s southern city of Nasiriya, HoM proposed to organise a series of 1-2 day workshops on peaceful and effective policing of protests. The initiative was warmly welcomed by the Minister.

HoM explained that the Mission is about to finalise the Ministry of Interior’s HR Technical Assessment and asked the Minister’s availability for a thorough briefing to discuss and decide the way forward.

The Minister stated that the expansion of the NMI was seen as a positive development, and both NMI and EUAM Iraq are extremely liked and respected by the Iraqis.

The Minister also informed that his current top priority was to reform the Police law and all related rules and regulations with the ultimate goal of transforming the Iraqi Police from a war-fighting force into a more normal, civilian policing unit.

Lastly, the Mission reassured its support to the Ministry. The Minister expressed his most sincere appreciation, stressing the importance of having regular and frequent meetings.
