It has been almost 7 years since the liberation of Iraq from Daesh, during which the country has made remarkable progress in the field of prevention and the fight against terrorism.
Against the background that threats of terrorism are constantly changing, the Counter-Terrorism Service organised a CT Review Strategy Conference under the auspices of the National Security Advisory and with the support of EUAM Iraq. More than 100 representatives from the National Committee for Countering Terrorism, the CT Strategy sub-committees, delegates from different ministries and provinces across Iraq as well as participants from other governmental bodies evaluated the current CT Strategy and set the course for the next one starting in 2026.
“The significance of this conference for our Mission is reflected in our presence” summarised Head of Mission, Anders Wiberg, who was accompanied by almost all of the strategic advisers and had the honour of delivering a speech himself. All thematic areas of the Mission's mandate, such as combating organised crime, prevention of violent extremism, protection of cultural heritage and border management, to name but a few, will be affected by the new strategy. It is therefore important for all advisers to know what their Iraqi counterparts decide in order to provide them with the best possible support in all areas.
